Shifter Set
I broke something on my girlfriend’s harley. Can you tell me what it was?
It might be some sort of spring, but whatever re-sets the shifter so that it’s ready to go up or down, broke or something while I was riding it. You have to re-set it manually with your toe before shifting down or up. I’m going to go get it fixed, but I’d like to sound more like I know what I’m talking about. What have I done?
If you can still shift gears after you “re-set” the shifter then is sounds to me like you have had a pawl carrier spring(s) let go (if it is a sportster) or the scissor spring for a Big Twin
The shifter pawl is a mechanism that changes the up/down shift to a in/out movement that allows the gears to move to the next position.
This will not be a cheap fix because the primary cover will have to be removed and the clutch pulled out to get to it.
Also as a word to the wise. I would not ride it. If the spring(s) have let go then there is a chance that the broken pieces can get chewed up in the gears (think even more $$ to fix)
