What Makes A Great M-1A Stock, Modern M-14 Stocks, A Modern M-14 Stock, An M-14 Stock For The 21st Century

The M-14 has seen 54 years service with the US military and will probably be around for another decade. Afghanistan in particular emphasised the need for a longer range cartridge in a semiautomatic rifle and lead to the US Army’s adoption of the US Navy Mk 14 Mod 0 Enhanced Battle Rifle in its rifle squads. The US Marine Corps had reintroduced the M14 as its Designated Marksman Rifle and recently moved to something very like the EBR in the form of its M39 Enhanced Marksman Rifle, although it has since moved to replace these with Army M110s. This was made possible by the lasting popularity of the M-1A with civilian shooters in the States who bought it by the thousand and made possible a thriving and inovative accesseory industry.

M-14 stocks have improved dramatically since the 1950s walnut or birch USGI unit. The original M14 stock was highly attractive, giving the rifle very smooth, clean lines, but it had been rendered obsolete by the German FG-42 15 years earlier. Prototypes had sported straight-line layout and pistol grips which has already become ubiqitous on other countries’ military rifles but the traditonalists won out in the end. The rifle had the facility to take a grenade launcher sight on the left side of its reciever, but optical sights, if considered, never made it onto the final product. Mounting scopes on the M-14 and M-1A has been so problematic that some target shooters have spot welded their bases to the receivers. The original stock made the full auto feature a waste of time and it was deleted from most service weapons.

Troy overcame this problem by putting the butt of their rifle slightly above the line of the bore. This puts recoil straight back into the shoulder making very fast follow-up shots possible. Troy went for full AR15 accessory capability from the start and the MCS can take any AR-15 butt or grip, with the difference that the butt stocks can fold. Troy wanted to sort the scope mounting problem once and for all. As with most modern rifles the Troy MCS sported a quad rail. However, Troy’s use of a very high mounted butt stock meant they could use a full lenght top rail that is the same height for its complete length. This makes co-witnessing iron sights like the Troy battle sights and Magpul Gen 2 MBUS easy as is mounting magnifiers and night vision systems. Common hand tools can be used to mount the two piece, machined aluminium MCS on any M-1A or M-14. When you factor in the weight of a normal receiver mounted scope base on an M-14 in a USGI stock there is no increase in weight for a rifle fitted with the Troy chassis system. This system can be fitted to any M-14, M1A or SOCOM 16 rifle regardless of barrel contour and provides adjustable pressure point bedding for increased accuracy. There is no need to glass bed the rifle and, unlike glass bedded stocks the bedding system doesn’t have to be rebuilt every 1000 rounds or so to maintain accuracy.
