How do you clean the seat of a western saddle?
I just got an old western saddle from an auction and it has stains all over the skin seat. How do i clean it without ruining the saddle?
If it’s an old saddle you probably won’t have any luck and you’ll have to consider them character. If it’s a stain it’s probably set in the leather and only replacement will get rid of them. If it’s dirt then you can take your saddle completely apart, take it out side and wash everything down with a water hose, a sponge and a bucket of warm water with a little dawn in it. They have other saddle soaps, but I think a lot of them don’t get it as clean and leave a residue. Just get in all the cracks and wash it down good and then leave it in the shade, not the sun, to air dry. When it’s dry bring it in and oil it down completely. This is the best you can do. I wouldn’t soak it for 30 min as one poster suggested. First, because I don’t have a container big enough to soak it in and two, because it would soften the leather, possible warping it and probably messing up any stamping. I got my instruction from the magazine from the arabian horse association, but do what you think will work best for you.
